The aim of this study was to discuss the efficacy of topical lidocaine jelly in reducing pain during pediatric intravenous catheter placement. This randomized controlled trial study included 150 inpatients who were 6-18 years old. Using convenience sampling, these participants were assigned to treatment (n = 75) and control (n = 75) groups. Children in the treatment group were administered 2% lidocaine jelly topically at the catheter placement site, while those in the control group were administered K-Y jelly instead before the placement of the intravenous catheter. The data were collected by monitoring physiological indicators of heart rate and oxygen saturation, and also through a self-structured questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The results demonstrated that children that received 2% lidocaine jelly topically had a lower VAS score during the intravenous injection (p < .001). However, there was no significant difference in the physiological indicators of heart rate and oxygen saturation (p > .05), and no influence on the success ratio of intravenous placement (p = .604). In conclusion, children who received partial administration of lidocaine jelly before intravenous injection perceived effective relief from the subjective feeling of pain. Such pain relief can reduce the stress of hospitalization. |
