COVID-19 was emerged in 2019 and spreaded rapidly throughout the world in 2020, severely affecting human health and lifestyles. Patients with COVID-19 must be isolated as soon as infection was suspected and undergo observation or treatment until their conditions were stable. The purpose of this study was to examine the mental health status of patients with suspected COVID-19 to the isolation event. A total of 151 patients who received care from January 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. The brief symptom rating scale was completed at admission, and the mental health assessment items included difficult sleep, anxiety, anger, depression, and low self-esteem. 13 patients (8.6%) with suspected COVID-19 felt mild to severe psychological distress. We found there were showed statistically significant differences on sore throat and anxiety (p=.026) and sore throat and low self-esteem (p=.011). The mental health assessments can be used to preliminarily screen patients' mental health while suspected COVID-19 in the hospital. Health care providers should pay attention to patients who have moderate to severe psychological distress due to physical symptoms during isolation, and they can return to a stable mental health status. |
