In this paper the meaning of ”kana” and ”kashira” is defined as a speaker's attitude that can't make a judgment or that doesn't intentionally make a judgment. ”Kana” and ”kashira” are analyzed into four categories; ”the judgment hasn't yet made”, ”speaker's judgment”, ”doubt”, and ”speaker's euphemistic assertion” in declarative sentences. In interrogative sentences and sentences of request direct questions and requests are changed into mild ones which leave judgment to listeners by using ”kana” and ”kashira”. This paper shows that both ”kana” and ”kashira” have a function of giving information. ”Kashira” shows a stronger tendency which makes a judgment undecided, and is hardly used in the sentence which expresses speaker's feelings in comparison to ”kana”. ”kashira” is hard to express a speaker's assertion in the sentence which expresses a speaker's evaluation on himself. ”Kashira” is more polite than ”kana”. |
