In the 1980s Botho Strauß repeatedly employed complex allusions in his plays. Like these earlier works, Schlußchor (1991) offers a complex mesh of allusion, yet these allusions do not signify unambiguously, partly because Strauß couches them within a polysemous allegorical framework. Structurally, Strauß's allusions promise intrinsically meaningful archetypes; however, the instability of the characters' roles generally end in mutually contradictory readings. The breakdown of allegory in the three acts of the play cannot be attributed to one cause. Nonetheless, each act pertains obliquely to the events of November 1989, and each suggests that our understanding of the Wende cannot be satisfactorily explained within traditional modes of literary discourse. |
