This paper adopts a longitudinal approach and uses the writing corpus collected by LARP at SCU. We have collected 396 writings from Taiwanese student studying at the Japanese department over 7 semesters and compared their lexical acquisition with 12 writings from Japanese students. The indexing of Chinese and Japanese lexicon into the (1) synonymy (S), (2) same characters with different meanings (D), (3) same characters with meanings not quite the same in Chinese or Japanese (O), (4) characters only intelligible in Japanese (J), (5) characters only intelligible in Chinese (C), (6) characters not intelligible in either Chinese or Japanese (N).The results are that for both low and mid level students, writing form both Chinese and Japanese show linear progression of S>J>O>D. For high level student who have adopted more sophisticated ways to decipher the meanings of characters, their proficiency grows rapidly.
