本文借多元系統論的中心邊緣說，將《道德經》早期英譯本置於一個較廣闊的文化歷史脈絡中，以三個英譯本為例，闡述《道德經》早期英譯的獨有現象。本文主要分為兩部分：第一部分探索基督教傳教事業與《聖經》漢譯跟《道德經》早期英譯的關係。第二部分先探討兩個英譯本如何因迎合主導意識形態的的需要而成為經典化的譯本，在多元系統中進佔中心位置，然後分析另一個英譯本如何因未能符合主導意識形態，而被推至邊緣的位置。
