在近期PMLA(Jan. 2001)裡,Said再次敦促我們正視文學研究全球化時應注意研究歷史,尤其是殖民史的歷史情境的再脈絡化。基本上,本文即為呼應Said對於「全球化」歷史情境脈絡化之召喚。本文想要關注探討的是帝國的中心在某個特定的歷史時空對邊緣的複雜反應:亦即,就地理位置而言,是大英帝國的中心,思索她與中國地理位置的關係;就時間意義而言,這個歷史情境正是帝國殖民主義的高峰期開始衰竭、又與現代主義興起時間上重疊交錯的時期。在此,我採用Eric Hobsbawm對於一八七五至一九一四年間稱之為「帝國的年代」("The Age of Empire")的說法,而一般論者是以二十世紀初作為現代主義的顛峰(詳後)。因此,以歷史脈絡化而言,現代主義出現的時機與帝國殖民主義之崩解重疊交錯,不是沒有道理的。
