佟妮．莫莉森（Toni Morrison）的小說《蘇拉》（Sula）關注於社會棄民（pariah），尤其以「女巫」般的蘇拉．皮絲為焦點。本文從蘇拉所代表的「新世界黑人」與「新世界女人」角度，探討蘇拉的社會棄民身分所隱含的緊張與衝擊。「社會棄民」在書中乃多重譬喻，用以質疑黑人族群內部以及白人美國之主流價值。莫莉森對蘇拉的刻畫充滿道德曖昧性，蘇拉違反黑女人母職、婦德與性慾的觀念，對於黑女人及黑人之概念均提出了重要質疑。蘇拉與謝卓埃克之對比，以及蘇拉與奈兒．萊特之對比，顯現黑人族群內部個體與社群、反叛與順應、新與舊的相對性。由是，莫莉森突顯黑人族群內部的複雜多元，並暗示改變的可能。
