本篇論文探討詹姆士《碧廬冤孽》中所呈現的十九世紀英國維多利亞時代權力論述、階級、性欲望取向與主體形成之間的辯證關係。小說本身眾聲喧嘩的詮釋史及其難以馴服定位的曖昧性，在某種程度上是對笛卡爾式形上學的雄／理性中心（phallogocentrism）、壓抑多元的思維一種最大的顛覆與反叛。本文企圖從一些研究十九世紀英國社會的史料，來了解為何維多利亞時期對性議題呈現異常焦慮，以及其對青少年身體進行嚴密監控的原因。本文也援用如布瑞斯陶（Joseph Bristow）、羅賓斯（Bruce Robbins）等人的論點，討論小說中主流論述對「性」正確的鞏固與焦慮，如何與階級意識有密不可分的關係。通篇主要驗證，在權力中心戒備森嚴的表象之下，潛伏著為主流價值觀所拒斥或制約的洶湧暗潮。《碧廬冤孽》顯示出這些暗流之能動性（agency）與顛覆潛能；也構成了小說本身歷久不衰的逾越／愉悅魅力。
