本論文從「休息、治療」和「談話治療」著手，作為探究「醫學／文學」的「歇斯底里」想像的起點。論文的主要研究文本包括米契爾的醫學論文《豐滿與血色》、吉爾曼的小說《黃壁紙》和其自傳《夏綠蒂‧柏金斯‧吉爾曼的生活：自傳》以及布洛伊爾的個案《安娜O.小姐》。在研究方法上，本論文計劃從精神分析、婦女研究、女性主義、文化研究、性別研究和文學評論等領域的多重角度切入。研究側重在分析治療方式所隱含的性別預設及想像，也希望透過這樣的研究來發覺醫生／女病人間的醫學知識／權力架構，以及性別與醫療方式及醫療體系的幽微處。
