自法農分析殖民地種族關係以來，在有關後殖民的討論裡情欲與性別位階一直被理論家視為與政治權力的運作有極密切的關係。透過廣義的政治解釋，情欲活動、性別關係常被解為抽象權力的投射。這樣的理論路線涉及兩個問題。第一，這是整個文化理論裡驅逐主體，顛覆真實的主流的一部份，卻明顯含有身體消失的可能性。其質主體想、像是身體與意義的中介，如果想像欲望抽離身體，變成只是權力的傀儡，權力本身反而可能本質化，成為不能解釋卻無所不在的力量。第二，隨著身體消失，接下來當然就是時間與公共性消失。這是後現代理論的老問題：太強調權力的操縱，結果就是經驗與記憶常被理論簡化為幾種基本情境，失去傳遞事與想像的可能。本文採用心理分析的觀點，特別是性分化的解釋與創傷理論的基本說法，認為主體與權力的關係可以表現為多重樣態，並非簡單的共謀、批判二分法所能處理。只有兼顧身體的真實性與想像意義，才不會抹煞主體時間與公共性的形成。電影《紅柿子》雖然並不處理情欲，卻隱含性別與權力關係的多重析辨，是極具啟發性的文化例證。
