「此刻且凝視那酷似基督的顏容，／惟其清明靈透能安頓你面見基督。」聖伯納德、如此語告但丁，要他好生準備面對《神曲》最後高潮的一刻一－賜福降喜（the Beatific Vision）的霎那。唯有事先端詳聖母瑪利亞的臉容，他才能領受上主的靈光。本篇論文要探討女性的角色，細究其如何有助於透視上主的光芒。論文開始先簡短介紹各宗教體系中以光代表神惡的原型概念，隨後提出較為詳盡的分析，探討但丁光的形上學中的宗教和哲學淵源。論文接著觸及但丁作品中的女性內涵，包括基督教傳統中聖母瑪利亞的形象、波修斯的哲學女士（Lady Philosophy）以及其他更為直接的影響淵源，比如宮廷愛情詩學、西西里學派（Sicilian School）以及溫柔新體（dolce stilnovo）。論文後半則結合《神曲》中女性和靈光的雙生概念，探討三部曲中的三個女性角色，尤其深入研究〈天堂篇〉最後一篇所描繪的聖母瑪利亞。
