這篇論文由愛爾蘭歷史的（後）殖民情境來解讀喬伊斯的〈伊奧勒斯〉，並指出喬伊斯的寫作，其實是要來顛覆〈伊奧勒斯〉表面之下所潛藏的文本（hidden text），也就是，喬伊斯對愛爾蘭文藝復興連動的批判。論文分四部（1）探討文藝復興運動的後退式史觀所流露出來的懷舊、返祖、英國化與希臘化的問題。（2）解構文藝復興運動所營造的英雄崇拜情結，並指出民族主義激情的虛妄性。（3）分析文化民族主義的內部殖民傾向，並以少數論述的觀點來看文化民族主義外鬥外行，內鬥內行的富點。（4）解析史蒂扮的〈李子的寓言〉，把冒現的藝術家史蒂汾定位為追求藝術自由及真理的有機知識份子，並說明喬伊斯以新的創作方式來作為後殖民愛爾蘭心靈救贖的起點。
