人類屠戮動物，掠奪土地資源，躁摘自然，自古皆然，於今尤烈。生態、批評家不斷發出警訊，但人類仍我行我素，不以為意。本論文擬從生態、批評中的動物研究著手，探討喬伊斯在《尤利西斯》裡呈現的動物情境，主要分成以下幾項論述：（1）從西方思想以理性為依歸的傳統切入，說明人類自居萬物之靈的富點，無法正視自身只是大自然中動物界的成員（2）從基督教神學角度探索人類剝削自然的暴力根源（3）從動物和人類之間的互動探討虐待、憐憫和實踐等議題（4）從動物角度探討《尤利西斯》裡因豢養、表演和狩獵為動物帶來的痛苦和無謂的死亡。
