本文閱讀一張二次大戰美國華裔社群普遍熟知的照片，討論照片圖像與拍攝時空之間，歷史進行與經過的痕跡，並進一步分析歷史在消失中所留下的光影殘像。其中涉及照片圖像再現與呈現所謂客觀歷史見證的過程，與觀看者閱讀族裔照片的策略，除了思考象徵文化社會價值的攝影機制與歷史發生的關係，也演練族裔歷史書寫的可能性。本文認為班雅民「歷史只在消失中顯現」的說法，以「此曾不在」（that-has-not-been）的進行預告，使消逝於時空中的族群互動與族裔複雜多層次的無法拍攝（unphotographability），必須藉由照片書寫與觀看方得以顯像。
