十九世紀英國人對本土文化身份的認知，由維多利亞時代初期對中產階級傳統道德觀念的執著，到晚期對頹廢風潮（decadence）的冒起，前後對比彷同隔世。本文所要探討的正是維多利亞文化身份（Victorian cultural identity）在1850-60年間所急劇性地出現的衰落過程；並透過檢閱當時所流行的家庭讀物，如煽情小說（sensation novel）和一般家庭雜誌的內容，嘗試理解中產階級傳統家庭道德觀念在維多利亞文化身份發展中所扮演的角色，以及這套文化身份觀的衰落的一些前因後果。本文刻意迴避了自薩伊德（Edward Said）以降普遍學者把文化身份定義在不同國家、文化的對立上的立場，旨意集中在個人對社會這基本的文化架構下，探討維多亞文化身份在十九世紀中期的演變程。
