十九世紀末、二十世紀初的倫敦都市,日漸成為令人炫目又刺激欲望的商品化景觀,而此時開始成熟的百貨公司,更是其中最佳代表,將空間、商品、視覺、欲望和幻想的互為滲透推到顛峰。百貨公司的興起,促使女性以消費者之姿日益踏入城市的商品化公共空間,也提供中下階級女性關鍵的就業機會,成為女性體驗城市現代性、參與公共領域的重要場域,也演繹女性和商品文化之間似夢似實、主賓不明的錯綜關係。女性的身體和服飾本身就是這種追求展示和景象的商品化空間的關鍵圖像,女性在百貨公司的經歷,到底是威脅、破壞,抑或是解放、促進女性主體的建構?本文以詹姆斯、吉辛和吳爾芙的倫敦小說為例,特別著重女店員/模特兒和窮女人的兩種重要經歷,探討女性和都市現代性的議題。
