The effects of substituting soybean meal and cassava flour with groundnut cake, brewery waste and rice bran on the growth performance and body composition of Oreochromis niloticus fry

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing dietary soybean meal with groundnut cake and dietary cassava flour with rice bran, brewery waste or a combination of rice bran and brewery waste on growth performance and body composition of 0.81 to 0.82 g of Oreochromis niloticus fry. Four different isonitrogenous (30 % CP) experimental diets were prepared and administered. Diet 1 (control) contained fishmeal, soybean meal, cassava flour and a blend of palm oil and fish oil as macroingredients. Soybean meal and cassava flour in the control diet were replaced with groundnut cake and rice bran to form Diet 2; soybean meal and cassava flour in the control diet were replaced with groundnut cake and brewery waste to form Diet 3; soybean meal and cassava flour in the control diet were replaced with groundnut cake and a mixture of rice bran and brewery waste to form Diet 4. The final weight and weight gain percentage of tilapia fry fed with a diet containing groundnuts and brewery waste was significantly higher than those of fish fed with a diet containing groundnuts and rice bran. There were no significant differences between the control diet (Diet 1) and Diets 2, 3, and 4 with respect to growth performance and feed conversion ratio. Replacement of soybean meal and cassava flour with groundnut cake, rice bran and brewery waste has no major effect on the body composition of the fish. Meanwhile, substitution has a positive effect on reducing the feed cost per kilogram of fish produced. It is suggested that the substitution of soybean meal and cassava flour with groundnut cake and brewery waste or a combination of brewery waste and rice bran is more economical and does not have an adverse effect on the growth performance of Nile tilapia fry.
