The rising polycentric production systems of urban cultural economy, as many researchers indicated, showed that non-major city-regions can foster the spatial clustering of cultural industries by capitalizing on local cultural resources within the spatial systems of production in the global niche market. Although many researchers have focused on the spatial dynamics of cultural industries in the Western context, less attention given to the relationship among environment, innovative activities and competence development of music industries in Taipei City. This article aims to explore how the urban selective environment influences the development of innovative activities and individual competence of workers within music industry clusters. We first collected quantitative data to map out the spatial distributions of music industry production systems in Taipei City and then conducted 16 interviews of music creative communities in Taiwan to examine our argument. In conclusion, the urban environment can not only function as a selective mechanism but also as the crucial place for music industry actors to facilitate and maintain their competence. Meanwhile, the spatial cluster of music industries would facilitate the building of sticky assets that shape Taipei as a key city for the accumulation of individual reputation and music actors' knowledge.
