A unified treatment of tightly-bound and weakly-bound excitons is presented in the second-quantized Wannier representation. The eigen-value problem of one particle-hole pair excitations is solved exactly by considering a two-band model Hamiltonian which includes the single-particle terms and the inter-band and intraband direct Coulomb repulsion terms. It is shown that the Frenkel and Wannier excitons are the limiting cases of such general solutions. The conditions of ground state instability is also discussed.
