Analysis of the playback signals with ring-type head based on the arctangent transition and the attenuated Sinusoidal transition in the metallic film media has been carried out. Generally for the former the longitudinal recording mode is favored whenever the recording wave length is relatively long compared to the medium thickness. As the wave length shortens the orientation ratio becomes greater than unity and the perpendicular recording mode becomes increasingly dominant. The trade-off point between these two operation modes varies with the orientation ratio, the gapwidth and other' parameters. For the attenuated sinusoidal transition there exists an optimum playback signal at a certain wave length for a given set of recording parameters. The signal is reduced as the wave length is either increased or decressed, and becomes vanishingly small even for the perpendicular mode at low wave length limit. An explanation to this effect is offered.
