Monte-Carlo Study of the String Tension for the Schwinger Model

We present a method to measure the string tension by introducing a heavy fermion into the Hamiltonian as a static external test charge. Then we measure the energy of a system of light fermions and two heavy fermions at sites (say, 0 and L). The string tension is defined as the increase in the ground-state energy per unit length due to external sources. To gauge the feasibility of this proposal we work in the massless and massive Schwinger model. We reproduce the known property that the long-range force disappears from which we infer that quark trapping does take place.
