Development of HTS Wires and Tapes

Conventional superconductors have resulted in many areas of large-scale applications, for which the materials are often used in a rather sophisticated multifilamentary wire or tape form. In contrast, high Tc superconductors are yet to enter the very preliminary stage toward the development of similar devices. Technical problems are mainly associated with their ceramic nature and the requirement of much involved processing at elevated temperatures. There are now several potential demonstrative projects being considered, and different approaches 10 produce long-length wires and tapes tested at various laboratories. This paper briefly reviews the current status of the manufacturing technology and the major difficulties encountered, as well as the physical and mechanical characteristics of the initial products.
