I review the history of our understanding of gauge symmetry, from Maxwell to Yang, to the use of Yang-Mills theory in constructin, u the standard model of elementary particle physics. I discuss recent attempts to go beyond the standard model, unify the seperate forces of nature and give an explanation for the origin of gauge symmetry.
