Top Discovery Results at CDF

In March 95, we announced the existence of the top quark. This is based on 3 top search analyses using a 67 pb^-1 data sample of pp collisions at √6 = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the dilepton analysis, we find 7 events with a background of 1.3±0.3. In the lepton + jets analysis with a b identified via a Silicon Vertex detector (SVX), we find 21 events with a background of 5.5±1.8. In the lepton + jets analysis with a b identified via Soft Lepton Tagger (SLT), we find 22 events with a background of 14.7±2.2. In conclusion, we find a signal consistent with tt decay into WWbb, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4.8 б. In addition, we measure the top quark mass to be 176±8 (stst) ±10 (syst) Gev/c^2, and the tt production cross section to be 6.8-2.4^3.6 pb using SVX channel only.
