203 normal school children, 94 boys and 109 girls, ranging in age from 8 to 16 years, were studied to establish the normal values of parameters of maximal expiratory flow-volume curves and the diffusing capacity (D(subscript L)CO). The parameters obtained from the flow-volume curves including forced vital capacity (FVC), one-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, forced expiratory flow rate at 25-75% FVC (FEF(subscript 25-75)) and the peak flow rate (PF). The parameters increased with age in both boy and girl student groups and the mean values of the parameters of the 94 boy students are higher than the 109 girl student group. The mean value of the diffusing capacity in boy student group was higher also. FVC, FEV1, FEF(subscript 25-75), PF and D(subscript L)CO in both study groups correlated positively with the weight, height and the age. However FEV1/FVC had no correlation with the anthropometric data. From this study, we may derive the regression equations of the ventilatory function parameters and the diffusing capacity of the 10 to 16 years old normal children, so that the predicted values may be easily obtained.
