The thermodiluation technique is an accurate and reproducible method of determining cardiac output in adult. However, it's accuracy is controversial at low outputs. This study evaluated the accuracy and reproducibility of thermodilution cardiac output measurements at low flows (0.56 to 1.01/min) through a in vitro model. Cardiac outputs were determined using a Gould cardiac output computer for each of three different injectate volumes (2,3 and 4 ml) at two different temperatures (0℃ and room temperature). There was a significant correlation (P<0.01) between the presetting flow and measured cardiac output, it was a reproducible means of measuring cardiac output in this low-flow in vitro model. When the tip of the Swan-Ganz catheter was outside the Tygon tube, There was still a significant correlation (P<0.01) between the presetting flow and measured cardiac output for all injectate volumes at both temperatures. |
