With the increasing numbers of inbound/outbound visitors, the fields of recreation and tourism are gaining in importance. To understand the trends in outdoor recreation research, the current study calculated the most cited international journals in the Journal of Outdoor Recreation Research over the past 5 years, and analyzed the research topics in the 7 most cited journals over the past 2 years. The findings indicated that the two most popular topics are tourism marketing and recreational behavior. Tourism marketing studies focused on promoting travelers, while the latter focused on the travel choices and behavioral tendencies. Other popular topics included: preference/evaluation, environment changes, motivation/need, Internet platforms/applications, environment impact and perception, environmental experience and cognition, and theoretical/ methodological issues. Detailed discussions and recommendations are provided in this study.
