This article discusses the problem of ji's original reading and its original phonetic loan forms with evidences from historical documents and modern dialects, thereby suggesting an explanation of the etymon of its reflexes in Southern Min.Ji has undergone drastic change in the development of Chinese language. While 4 types of morphology could be reconstructed, no particular dialect keeps them all today. Thus, the diminutive and interrogative form with rising (上聲) is active in colloquium Mandarin, but the form with level tone(平聲) could be found only in fossil lexicons such as jihu幾乎and shuji庶幾. Southern Min, on the other hand, keeps the level tone form used with quantifier and number words as well as the rising tone form. It is in Southern Min, furthermore, that ji got its innovative developments.
