This paper is written with the unpopular belief that the crusades and Military Orders were not all bad. It opens with possible reasons for condemning the crusades, showing how much criticism is based on a failure to understand the real motive for these military endeavours. It then looks at what role the crusades played in protecting Europe from the Muslim armies and concludes with remarks on the nature of security.
