方東美早年與熊十力就佛學問題展開了一場爭論，在晚年他又多次對熊十力的學術觀點和學風提出評判。方氏站在什麼學術立場上批評熊十力？他立足於什麼樣的思想傳統批評熊十力？他批評熊十力的態度在早年與晚年有什麼不同？本文力圖對這幾個問題做出客觀公允的評說，藉以說明方氏與熊氏的分歧是傳統儒學固有的「道問學」與「尊德性」對立在現代文化背景下的繼續。

In his early years Fang Dongmei disputed against Xiong Shili on Buddhist doctrine, and then over and over again criticized Xiong Shili's academic point of view and style of study during his later years. From what academic standpoint does Fang Dongmei criticize Xiong Shili? What traditional thought does he hold to criticize Xiong Shili? What's the difference between his critical attitude toward Xiong Shili in early years and in later years? This paper is intended to fairly form a judgment on those questions above so as to explain that the divergence of opinion between Fang and Xiong is the continuation of the opposite positions between ”Pursuing Scholarship” and ”Honoring the Nature of Morality” inherent in traditional Confucianism, still happening upon the background of modern culture.
