神蹟的本質與可能性有必要被考察。在基督宗教和中國的宗教傳統中，已經考察過許多關於神蹟的定義。而休謨反對神跡可能性的論證，則是在一個實在論知識論的脈絡底下加以考察的。作者以為此一論證應可以引領宗教人士在接受神蹟存在的宣稱時，保持謹慎的心態。然而，若排除「一次性」發生事件的可能性，不管是科學上的（如宇宙的起源或地球生命的開端），或是存在於某個宗教傳統之中的（如宇宙的創造或耶穌的復活），不管科學上或宗教上，似乎都會削弱了所有一致性瞭解的可能。

The possibility and nature of miracles are considered. Various definitions of miracle are considered from the point of view of both Christianity and the religious traditions of China. Hume's argument against the possibility of miracles is then considered within the context of a realist epistemology. The author suggests that the argument should lead religious persons to be very careful in accepting miraculous claims. At the same time, to rule out the possibility of ”one-time” happenings, whether in science (such as the origin of the universe or the beginning of life on this planet) or within a religious tradition (the creation of the universe or the resurrection of Jesus) would seem to undercut the possibility of any unified understanding whether scientific or religious.
