While Nietzsche invoked Dionysus with music, Chinese writers used wine to nourish the wine god deep in their souls to do magic. Tang Yen (1857-1920) mentioned in his poem, ”Drinking,” how Han Yu (768-824) wrote drunkenly. As one of the ”Eight Great Writers of the Tang and Sung Dynasties,” Han Yu only drank in the gatherings of writers and poets, using wine to hoard his creative energy. Zhang Xu (675?-750?), known as the saint of cursive script, is also mentioned in Tang Yen's poem. Zhang Xu got really carried away with the wild cursive script while he was drunk. Another equally famous calligrapher in the Tang Dynasty was Monk Huai Su (725-785), who was also amazing after drinking. This paper is divided into four sections: the first section is about drinking and recollecting the past; the second section about the wine god and writers; the third section about the culture and practice of drinking; and the fourth section about the songs of drinking and refraining from it. |
