「誠」之觀念在《中庸》哲學中，有其本體論、心性論與工夫論之三重意義，若以中國哲學之三元性思維而言，則又有其扮演「主體性意義」之關鍵性地位，透過「誠」的體現，不但可掌握天命之性的內涵，更可透過「致誠」的工夫，達到「致中和」的「中庸」境界，統合人間的生活世界與形上理想，突顯「人」介於形上與形下之間的中介位置。「誠」觀念可說是理解《中庸》哲學的方法，也是掌握中國哲學中主體性觀念之意義的重要指標。 本文擬從《中庸》「誠」觀念之源流與發展開始，探討在儒家哲學傳統中，此一觀念的發展與成熟，尤其在《論語》、《孟子》，以及《大學》中與「誠」觀念相關的思想。其次，再從「三元性思維」的角度切入，論述「誠」觀念分別在「天道」、「人性」，以及「道德實踐工夫」諸領域所扮演的角色，以及其對「主體性」所確立的統合性與理想性意義。最後，再就「誠」觀念之方法與德目揭示其具體而淺近的實踐方法，並說明其在現代社會中對於價值之重建的重要性。

In the philosophy of The Doctrine of the Mean, the idea of ”sincerity” has ternary meanings, respectively related to ontology, the mind-nature theory and the cultivation theory. With regard to the ternary thinking of Chinese philosophy, the idea of ”sincerity” plays the crucial role of ”subjective meaning.” Through the embodiment of ”sincerity,” the immanence of the nature of the heavenly will can be grasped, and the state of ”making harmony” and ”golden mean” can be achieved through the cultivation of ”being sincere,” uniting the living world with the metaphysical ideal and highlighting the mediate position of ”man” between the metaphysical and the physical. The idea of ”sincerity” is the right approach not only to the philosophy of The Doctrine of the Mean but also to the meaning of subjectivity in Chinese philosophy. First, this article is intended to address the source and progress of the idea of ”sincerity” in The Doctrine of the Golden Mean so as to inquire the development and maturity of this idea in the tradition of Confucian philosophy, especially the related thoughts in Analects, Mengzi, and The Great Learning. Second, we will approach this idea from the perspective of ”ternary thinking” and address the roles of ”sincerity” in the fields of the ”heavenly way,” ”human nature” and the ”cultivation of moral practice,” along with its integrative and ideal meanings regarding ”subjectivity.” Finally, on the methodology and virtue of the idea of ”sincerity,” we would show the concrete and easy ways to practice ”sincerity” and explain how important it is to the re-establishment of values in the modern society.
