Foucault's concepts of maladie and mal involves arguments at two levels. The first is the medical history, suggesting that the theory of the being of the disease was abandoned in early 19^(th) century and that the disease or maladie has been regarded not as evil but as an empirical fact irrelevant to metaphysics. The second is the philosophy of medicine, suggesting that the pathological anatomy-based concept of the disease or maladie signifies no advancement of knowledge but one medical perception substituted by another. Whether and to what extent can the concepts of maladie and mal be expanded in support of moves in the direction of a comparative philosophy of medicine? Focusing on Foucault's claim of the disassociation of modern medicine of the "metaphysic of evil", this article explores the Eurocentrism that Foucault’s concepts of maladie and mal, or more generally his philosophy of medicine may imply. The potential for a critical comparative philosophy of medicine to be built on a Foucauldian base is discussed using Chinese medicine as a reference.
