One of Prof. Vincent Shen's academic concerns is the interpretation of Confucianism. Prof. Shen maintained that when interpreting Confucian ethics, we must exhibit the essential of Confucianism as a virtue ethics. Prof. Shen's interpretation of Confucianism had also underlain the concepts, such as "many others" and "strangification" of his philosophical discourse. The purpose of this paper is to point out that, as far as the philosophical resources he has used and the linguistic backdrop of Sinophone against which his ideas were developed is concerned, Prof. Shen's interpretation of Confucianism can be taken as a form of "Sinophone Studies" with the insight of his approach to Confucianism and its implication for culturing. Further, such insight and implication inspired by Prof. Shen may serve as a framework for us to understand the phenomenon of multiculturalism, tackle the problems with customs and investigate the inquiry into our self-identity that are highly relevant to the history and geography of Taiwan and its current situation. In this regard, Prof. Shen's interpretation of Confucianism might have provided us a guideline for thinking the possibility of "Sinophone Studies in Practice."
