章太炎的語言哲學散見於《文始》、《國故論衡》、《小學答問》、《檢論》等著作中。其語言哲學的重要理論貢獻表現在對於中國語言文字的起源及其特殊性的認識，對於六書的語言哲學意義的闡發，對於中國語言文字與民族特性的關係的研究，對於語言與世界、語言與思維關係的探討四個方面。由於語言學與語言哲學的理論相關性，與之在中國現代語言學史的歷史地位相應，章太炎堪稱中國現代語言哲學的開山大師。

Taiyan Zhang's philosophy of language can be found in several works, such as An Review of the National Heritage, A Question and Answer of Xiao Xue and Jian Lun. The important theoretical contributions of Taiyan Zhang's philosophy of language are mainly manifested in the following four aspects: the understanding of origin and the particularity of Chinese language, the elucidation of the origin of Chinese characters and the philosophical significance of language in the the six categories of Chinese characters, the research of the relationship between Chinese language and its national characteristics and the discussion of the relationship between language and the world. Because of the theoretical correlation between linguistics and philosophy of language, Taiyan Zhang can be called the originator of Chinese modern philosophy of language, corresponding to its historical position in the history of Chinese modern linguistics.
