This paper argues, with reference to both ancient and modern authors, that the fundamental distinction between Platonic and Christian mysticism is that the former understands love as the soul's aspiration to divinity, whereas the latter understands it as the mutual self-giving of a personal Creator and his creature. Thus, whereas the imagery of Platonism (with the whimsical exception of Apuleius) is homoerotic or autoerotic, Christianity borrows and elaborates the nuptial allegory of the Song of Songs. The consequence is that Christian mysticism is more sensuous, never wholly losing sight of the body, and feminizing the soul of the believer, whatever the latter's natural sex may be.
