Among Taiwan's major cities, Kaohsiung City had lagged in development. It enjoyed no comprehensive development until the Japanese colonial rule. Based on its need to control and guard the Taiwan Island, the Japanese government proposed the implementation of various policies, which included the construction of both the North-South railway lines and the Harbor in Kaohsiung. To accommodate this policy, Kaohsiung train routes and stations were accordingly designed, which in tum affected the overall growth of the Kaohsiung area. In step with the train station expansion, the Japanese government also urgently carried out the Kaohsiung (formerly Takao) harbor improvements. Following the dredging of the harbor, the earth was used to fill and form the newly erected street blocks that followed the urban planning guidelines. As a result, a new Kaohsiung city was created. This research focuses on the spatial planning within Kaohsiung city during the Japanese colonial rule. Using the two information sources from the Japanese period, namely the Taiwan Historica Museum and the National Taiwan Library, first-hand references are drawn, to argue for the case that in the course of Kaohsiung's urban planning, the railways and harbor were two major transportation factors that had a significant impact on the city. In sum, there are several points in this thesis. First, a discussion of the harbor's past development and natural environment before the Japanese rule, as well as the infrastructure development strategies employed by the Japanese Governor. Second, an exploration of the railway routes development and the location of train stations, in addition to a survey of the harbor and planning. Thirdly, the Japanese resolution to expand the space of Kaohsiung. Finally, an analysis of the two key transportation factors, the railway and the harbor, for their importance to and influence on the Kaohsiung city planning as a whole. |
