The focus of this study is on footwear culture of the Taiwanese during the period of Qing Dynasty Rule in Taiwan. The features of footwear at the time fully demonstrated a mixture of Chinese and Taiwanese cultures. The materials for shoemaking came from China's coastal area and the styles of the shoes were similar to those of the Han people's native places, such as Zhang, Quan and Yue (Guangdong). On the other hand, in order to adapt to the climate and living conditions in Taiwan, straw sandals made from local resources by women were most commonly worn by the Hans. Leather shoes did not become popular even under the influence of Western culture after the ports were opened to foreign trade in the late Qing Dynasty, which brought the islanders into contact with the world's economies and religions. In fact, straw sandals were adopted by Western missionaries and soldiers while preaching or marching in Taiwan so as to accommodate the island's surroundings. Footwear also revealed class differences. People from upper-middle class families desired luxurious footwear. They not only wore shoes made from silks and satins but threw away used shoes still in very good condition, an example of the extravagance of gentry elite in the reclamation society of Taiwan. The common people at the time wore black cloth shoes or straw sandals in general. They were frequently barefoot all day for farm work and wore shoes only on special occasions. In the early stage of this period, the aborigines were barefoot. A small number of relevant sources indicate that they wore shoes made from leathers when they were hunting. Yet due to Sinicization, their garment became similar to the Hans later on. |
