英文摘要

Objectives: The general public assumes that patients with schizophrenia are violent and dangerous and therefore holds negative attitudes toward them. This affects the patients in various psychosocial aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stigma experiences of these patients. Patients and Methods: Nine patients participated in this phenomenological study through face to face in-depth interviews with an interview guide. Interview data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. Results: Results showed that the stigma experiences of patients could be categorized as: “having an unacceptable disease,” “ability being doubted by others,” ”self-inflicted rejection,” “multiple losses,” and “anticipatory life strains.” Conclusion: The implications of the study are two-fold. First, the stigma experiences of patients should be one of the critical elements of patient care. Secondly, health care professionals need to be aware of ambivalent feelings of patients toward their illness. It is suggested that cognitive therapy, social skill training and support groups can be used to regulate internal and external stresses of patients and families.
