Glass-type static smoke barriers(SSB)are the most common component of a Smoke and Heat Control System in Taiwan. In accordance with building types and structural spans, there are many possible layouts to form a smoke containment zone. The SSB usually are damaged in major earthquakes in Taiwan and Japan. The sharp fragments of the glass will obstruct escape route for people and lose the efficacy to prevent the smoke spreading in the fires following earthquake. In order to investigate the variables of the layout, boundary condition and length between support of SSB, 7specimens are subjected to out-of-plane shaking table tests in conjunction with the exposed ceiling system. According to the result of large scale shaking table test, an analytical model is established and verified. The out-of-plane dynamic characteristics of the SSB with two-sided free edge are obtained and the empirical formula to evaluate the natural frequency of the SSB with two-sided fixed edge by length between support are corrected. The conclusion of this study could provide a guideline to conduct the seismic performance design and improvement of glass-type static smoke barriers.
