This study explores the symbolic association between cultural industry clusters and urban environment by conducting a case study of the music labor market and consumer market. Existing research on the spatial clusters of cultural industries has emphasized that producer-centred innovative activities can benefit from spatial proximity effects and socio-economic exchange of cultural firms. However, less attention has been paid to the role of the local labor market and consumer market of cultural industries in influencing the construction of urban symbolic associations. Drawing on the 'economy of quality' perspective, this study re-conceptualizes the production and consumption of cultural industries as a duality, offering a departure point for exploring why cultural industries agglomerated in urban regions. After examining the labor pool and consumer market of the Taipei music industry, this study concludes the 'local reputation effect' is a symbolic association, which stemmed from the interactive relationship between music industries and urban environment, thus explaining why Taipei City has a monopoly on music production and consumption within the Chinese region as well as to attract music enterprises. This study also suggests that it is necessary to integrate the relationship between cultural producers and consumers into existing research to facilitate an understanding of the spatial dynamics of the urban cultural industry.
