In Taiwan, the cult of Mazu has the different appearance over the years due to the influence of political situation, economic development and social change. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significance and characteristics of Mazu's cult development through the change of social environment based on the pilgrimage route of Dajia Jhenlan Temple.Temple plays the role of central place, provides a lot of service for people in their community. As the development of industry and economics, 'person-land relation” declines gradually. That results in the change of traditional function of central place of temple. In recent years, Jhenlan Temple breaks away from the influence of the past closed system, limits from the hierarchy of Mazu in Taiwan, by transforming the management committee and expanding the pilgrimage route. It's means that ”person-person relation” and ”place-place relation” is important gradually. Especially in 1987, after the government has declared martial law ended, the members of Jhenlan Temple management committee came to MeiChou (China) and brought back the statue of MeiChou Mazu in order to challenge the hierarchy of Mazu in Taiwan. After 1990s, the cult's competition from MeiChou Mazu caused Jhenlan Temple to expand the pilgrimage route and organized the ”Taiwan Mazu Fellowship” to contend with it. |
