The wild deer used to play a key role in the history of Taiwan. More than three or four hundred years ago, numerous deer had once inhabited the plains of Taiwan. However, due to the development of commerce during the Ming Dynasty, the Taiwan wild deer became the staple commodity as a major exportation, not only resulting in the gradual decrease in the quantity of the Taiwan wild deer because of the hunting by the inhabitants in the fields but also causing the tremendous change of the lifestyle for the aborigines: the aborigines made use of the deer to boost market, not just for the need of everyday life. Eventually, the continuous influx of the immigrants changed the living environment of deer that were farmed and hunted, ruining the farming system during the Qing Dynasty. In a word, the human economic activity causes the change of the environment that finally leads to the vanishing of the deer by degrees in Taiwan.
