This study examined the use of Shijing in lantern riddles by Taiwanese literati during the Period of Japanese Occupation. Using the lantern riddle answers from the Book of Songs as examples, we discovered how Taiwanese literati under Japanese rule viewed and used the memory of classics. Since October 1914, the Taiwan Daily Newspaper has used ”yo-mei-yi-ren” (there is a beautiful lady) from Chen Feng‧Ze Po or Zheng Feng‧Ye You Man Cao as a riddle answer. Additionally, 369 Minor Journals used ”wei-er-bu-xin” (people will say that you are untruthful) from Xiao Ya‧Xiang Bo as a riddle answer in March 1936. Previous studies have revealed that many literati tried to keep the traditional memory of classics through creating lantern riddles related to Shijing during this period for more than twenty years.
This study examined the use of memory from Shijing by Taiwanese literati under great historical disjunction from the dimensions of Tang Ching-Sung and Taiwanese ”Riddle-Ology,” overview and text of classics as Taiwanese riddle answers, and research on intertextuality between Shijing and Taiwanese lantern riddles during the Period of Japanese Occupation. From our discussion and examination, we discovered that traditional literati after the abolishment of imperial examination were stuck between two opposing ends of approval and mockery of the memory of classics representing distinctive characteristics of that period.
