Discussions about the reality and the imitation of reality, or virtual reality, in history started as early as Aristotle. These discussions analyze the dichotomy of ideological relationship between history and aesthetics, between history and literature, and between history and fiction. They also lead to exploration of the characteristics of history itself. Intellectual interests of scholars and historians have been drawn to this field for ages. Similar debates are still raging even to this date.
Electronic games have rapidly become one of the most important recreation activities among younger generations in recent years. The popularity of electronic games gains even more momentum as game developers infuse highly developed technology and creativity into the design of the electronic games. Historical electronic games may be different from historical drama and historical novels in its characteristics and presentation platform. Nevertheless, historical electronic games incite controversial discussions on reality and virtual reality in history the same way historical drama and historical novel did.
This paper analyzes and discusses the characteristics of history as well as that of historical electronic games. These analysis and discussion will promote a better understanding of history, its position and essence. Hopefully, this discussion and analysis can also widen the field of historical research.
