Although the Battle of Yulin, north Shan'xi, in the late October, 1947, only lasted about four weeks, and the losses in the war on both sides of the KMT and Communists were inconsiderable, this battle was the most pivotal one in the Northwestern Battlefield during the entire KMT-Communist Civil War. General Hu Zhungnan chased the Northwestern Field Army, led by Peng Dehwai in northern Shan'xi, southern Ningxia and eastern Gansu. In spite of the frequent victories in the pursuit, General Hu's troops were tired out, needing a place for rest and re-supply. In this battle, the Communists came rapidly and fiercely and had some violent encounters; however, due to the supports of Ma Hongkwei from Ningxia, the Communists ended the battle without achieving any goals. Notably, during the battle, General Fu Zhuoyi. the Vice Commander of the Beijing Command, once suggested President Jiang Kai-Shak that the KMT must utilize the chance to stop the Communists in this battle. They could have concentrated all the military power in Shan'xi and Ningxia to wipe out the Communists in the Northwestern at once. However, pitifully, the High Command of KMT did not see the value of this battle, and there were not a commander, with enough reputations and prestige, to command the variety of the troops in the Northwestern Battlefield. Thus, the chance was not coped, and Peng's troops could disengage the battle easily. |
