本文以一張清同治五年，有關歸還南京城廂教會產業的中法文契約為核心文物，探討這張契約簽訂的背景，以及歸還與補償南京教產的過程。所謂背景包括禁教時期南京教會產業的變遷，教友概況及人數，歐洲列強入侵及所簽訂的不平等條約，太平天國的影響等。比對傳教士撰寫的《江南傳教史》及總理衙門檔案編成的《教務教案檔》， 可以發現李鴻章的個人意見，是阻攔契約簽訂的最主要原因。初看中國檔案中所提到的士紳反對，其實只是地方督撫搪塞上級的藉口。總理衙門給李鴻章的壓力，是最後契約能簽訂的主因。這張契約的簽訂，有各種合理與現實的考量，不能簡單視之為帝國主義侵略的結果。而此契約的最主要成果， 就是從1630 年代畢方濟建立迄今的南京主教座堂。

The primary material of this article is a deed, in both Chinese and French, about returning the properties of Nanjing Chengxiang Churches in 1866. This article will probe into the historical background of the deed, and trace how the properties of Nanjing Archdiocese were returned and compensated. The background included the transition of Archdiocesan properties during the prohibition of Christianity, the structure and amount of laypersons, unequal treaties signed with Western powers, influences of Taiping Rebellion, and so on. By means of comparison and contrast of Histoire de la Mission du Kiang-nan by Aug. M. Colombel S. J. and Jiaowu Jiao'an Dang (Archives of Missionary Affairs and Missionary Cases) of Zongli Yamen (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), we may discover that Li Hongzhang's personal will was the major obstacle to signing the deed. Local gentry's objection to the matter in the archive was merely the excuse of the governors. The pressure from Zongli Yamen eventually made the deed established. Signing the deed was based on various rational and realistic considerations. It could not be regarded simply as the consequence of imperial invasion. The most prominent achievement of the deed till now is Nanjing Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception built by Francesco Sambiasi, S. J. in the 1630s.
