此本書提供了古埃及的相關知識，例如歷史、宗教、文學、藝術和史學史。無庸置疑，古埃及是世界上古史中最古老的文明之一。古典時期的史學家、旅遊家和探險家記錄了他們當時到埃及的經歷，將他們對這個古文明的驚艷重新透過文字展現在世人眼前，使得現代的我們對古埃及文明仍心嚮往之。在拿破崙（Napoleon Bonaparte；1769-1821）進軍埃及之後，埃及學猶如雨後春筍般的成立，西方國家開始傾心鑽研古埃及語言和文獻，同時，也帶起了一股「埃及熱」（Egyptomania）風潮。自此，不少的學者也開始致力於研究古埃及的文化、歷史、語言、藝術、建築和宗教等等，且許多歐美大學更是將「埃及學」列入於重點學科，同時派遣考古隊到埃及進行考古工作，博物館裡也有各式各樣的古埃及文物收藏。近幾世紀以來，歐美國家對於古埃及的研究一直持續地有新的進展。反觀之亞洲，由於歷史文化背景不同，至今對於「埃及學」的知識仍很缺乏，由此，任何以中文書寫關於「埃及學」或是「古代埃及」的書籍都應該給予極大的支持和鼓勵！
